The Art + Design Building on Louisiana State University’s campus houses the college’s Interior Design and Landscape Architecture students. Both majors rely heavily on long hours spent by students and faculty alike in studio classrooms. When setting out to create a staircase that would connect the building’s four floors in the atrium, the amount of time students spend in this building was at the forethought of my design. My intention was to create a comfortable space that would give students both a “home away from home,” as well as collaborative spaces that could serve as a break from the monotony of the studio. I wanted there to be spaces for dining, studying, collaboration in groups, and relaxing.
